Job Titles With Attitude

21/6/2017

Are you the person organising events in your company?  What is your job title? Are you the Events Rockstar? The Chief Organiser of Everything Important? The Getting It Done Ninja?
We are running a competition for the best job titles in the conference planning world. Send through what you wish your job title was or your actual amazing job title for a chance to win a prize from one of our favourite venues.
According to Elizabeth Kraus of B2B Marketing: “Two things we are summing up when making first impressions are ‘what are the intentions of the person towards me?’ and ‘how strong and competent is this person?’.  Creative job titles can assist in making a lasting and confident first impression.  In addition, a great title can also help a dynamic company to attract like-minded candidates.
So how much of a difference can a fancy job title actually make?  Let’s take the title mentioned above as an example.  The Events Rockstar instead of The Events Co-ordinator. The Events Rockstar is a person who knows their stuff. The resourceful dynamo who is a natural at creating amazing events.  The Events Co-ordinator on the other hand, sounds more like the person shuffling and organising all of the necessary information to put an event together.  Both people have the same job, but which one would you want organising your events?

Some other good examples of this are:
  • Chief People Officer – Head of HR
  • Director of First Impressions – Receptionist
  • Money Maestro – Accounting Manager
  • Wizard of Light Bulb Moments – Marketing Director

Amusingly, job titles can also sometimes perhaps go a little too far. The BBC News has written an article on how job titles can sometimes serve to over-inflate a job role.
Take for example the title “Environmental Maintenance Officer ” who it turns out is the garbage collector.  Or the “Transparent-Wall Maintenance Engineer” also known as Window Cleaner.  To read more from this article click here

It’s always great to maintain a good sense of humour about these things. At the end of the day though, whether a job title serves to capture the culture of a forward thinking organisation, or whether it bestows a regular working person with a sense of pride in their everyday job, thinking outside of the box can certainly add value.
