In the conference and events industry we come across many different women and men and in this first issue for 2017 we would like to shout out to women. Business Retreats Australia (BRA) as an event agent acts as a bridge between our clients and suppliers, and we have had the privilege to encounter some truly amazing, strong and powerful women on both sides of that bridge... I was invited by an industry colleague to the Business Chicks breakfast in Melbourne. Sophia Amoruso was the guest speaker. I was pleasantly surprised, impressed and truly inspired by Sophia’s quiet, strong and introverted presence. She represents strong women, who keep going, don’t give up, learn from the experiences and most importantly support each other. Sophia was talking candidly about the evolution of her business and her journey from troubled teenager to the even more challenging role of business manager. She described the lessons she had learned on both personal and work levels and the rewards and pitfalls of success.
A day later, when Sophia was scheduled to speak at the Business Chicks’ breakfast in Sydney, news broke that Sophia’s online fashion store Nasty Gal had filed for bankruptcy. She broke into tears whilst talking about it to her captive audience. She said, “It’s my first business and I got really far.” The audience of 1000 cheered, still an amazing woman in their eyes.
