Book Review by Katarina CobainThe Artist's Way for Parents: A spiritual approach to raising creative children
Julia Cameron This book’s title hooked me in. I was still under the influence of the MCEC Open Day in February and Todd Sampson’s talk on creativity. After listening to Todd my curiosity about creativity and what it means peaked. I got the book from a small book shop and the owner told me that she read it and is curious to find out what I think. We shared our concern about today’s education and our tendency to follow the norm to ensure that our kids are part of the larger group and don’t stick out unless they are good at traditional subjects; Maths, English, Science and Sport. The other parts of their personality are buried, both intentionally as well as unintentionally simply lost in the busy day with no spare time to just be. I was hoping that the book will help me learn how to encourage creativity within my family. I am now on that path and the book has helped by shining some light on simple things that I’ve forgotten about as I am chasing the time every day trying to fit daily tasks efficiently and quickly. My family has been running like a well-oiled machine and there was no time for simple fun. Some of the tips that I’ve already successfully have done with my kids are weekly adventures allowing kids to chose what they would like to do. The other one is to allow the mess, as long as we clean up too. Now I am reading Artist’s Way, Julia’s first book and the bestseller written in 1992. I am keen to know how it has inspired millions of others — including notables like Alicia Keys and Steven Tyler. If you’ve always wanted to do something creative such as writing, building, drawing, dancing please read more and get this book. I am not sure if the “morning pages” will work for you. I am yet to do them religiously! Comments are closed.
